Research Software Engineer (f/m/x) “Surgical Artificial Intelligence Platform”

 

This full-time-position opens with immediate effect. It is currently limited until August 14th 2025 but an extension is intended.


The 6G-life Research-Hub “digital transformation and sovereignty of future communication networks” funded by BMBF offers opportunities to translate foundational research into applicable products. Our interdisciplinary research group of AI-based assistance systems in surgery is part of the Department of Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus at Technische Universität Dresden and is responsible for the medical use cases within CeTI and 6G-life. We aim to translate clinical problems into visions for AI-based assistance that we then realize together with research partners from computer science, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as psychology at TUD Dresden University of Technology, the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden and the Else-Kröner-Fresenius-Center for Digital Health to improve surgical treatment for our patients.

 

We offer a highly interdisciplinary position for a Research Software Engineer to implement new and develop further already existing components of our surgical artificial intelligence platform. Here, our mission is to develop an Autobahn-like infrastructure to let surgical data and AI flow effortlessly. You will help to answer open research questions concerning efficient and scalable collection, transfer, annotation, storage and sharing of surgical data. You will work in close collaboration with and under co-mentorship of the Department of Translational Surgical Oncology at the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT, Prof. Speidel) and help building the bridge between surgery, computer science and engineering within the BMBF-research hub 6G-life and the DFG Cluster of Excellence CeTI at TUD Dresden University of Technology and Technical University of Munich (TUM). The results of your work will directly impact research at the forefront of surgical artificial intelligence by enabling faster research cycles and rapid deployment of AI-based assistance systems in our operating rooms.

 

Your Profile: 

  • M.Sc. degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Medical Informatics or Biological Informatics
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with the capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment
  • Proven experience in full-stack web or software development
  • Strong interest and familiarity with database technologies
  • Understanding and knowledge of software engineering best practices, including version control using Git and Test-Driven Development 
  • Experience with Linux operating systems
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
