As a maximum care hospital, it covers the entire spectrum of modern medicine. The University Hospital unites 25 clinics and polyclinics, seven institutes and 19 interdisciplinary centers that work closely with the clinical and theoretical institutes of the Faculty of Medicine. The University Hospital's facilities and technical equipment are constantly being updated. Most recently, the new Building 32 was opened at the end of 2018, which houses the surgical emergency department, 17 state-of-the-art operating theaters, an intensive care unit, interdisciplinary outpatient clinics and 132 beds spread across four nursing wards.
With 1,410 beds and 201 places for day clinic treatment, it is one of the largest hospitals in Saxony and the only maximum care hospital in eastern Saxony. The catchment area extends from Görlitz to Glauchau, from Bad Brambach to Hoyerswerda.
Around 1,000 doctors cover the entire spectrum of modern medicine at Dresden University Hospital. 2,000 nursing staff look after the well-being of the patients.
In addition to its central purpose of providing medical care, Dresden University Hospital also fulfills tasks in the training and further education of medical staff and in public health care.
Since July 1, 1999, the University Hospital has been a public law institution of the Free State of Saxony. Decisions can therefore be made more quickly and directly on site. The bodies of the University Hospital are the Supervisory Board and the Board of Directors.
