Doctoral Candidate (m/f/d)

at the Center for Translational Bone, Joint, and Soft Tissue Research

 

 

The position is to be filled full-time, limited to 3 years starting from March 1, 2026.

 

This position is part of the European doctoral network “SHIELD” (Strategies for Healing Implant-associated infections and Enhancing Longevity in Devices), which offers 16 early-career researchers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of managing implant-associated infections (IAIs). The focus is on in-depth research of the complex mechanisms causing IAIs, as well as the development of novel antibacterial biomaterials.

 

The aim of the position is to develop innovative hydrogel-based bacteriophage formulations to effectively combat oral biofilms on metallic implant surfaces in the future, thereby sustainably improving the treatment of implant infections and significantly extending the lifespan of medical implants.

Your tasks:

 

  • Development and characterization of injectable, phage-loaded biomaterials based on (bio)polymers and bioactive glasses

  • Isolation, maintenance, and antibacterial testing of bacteriophages against oral bacterial species

  • Analysis of phage activity—both free and embedded in biomaterials—using in vitro biofilm models

  • Collaboration with SHIELD project partners, including research stays in partner laboratories

  • Writing scientific publications and active participation in laboratory organization

 

 

Perfect fit — Your profile:

 

  • Completed university degree

  • Experience in bacterial cultivation and characterization

  • Expertise in biochemical, microscopic, and microbiological analysis

  • Handling of toxic and sensitive substances

  • Microbiological work compliant with genetic engineering safety level 1

  • Very good command of English, spoken and written
