The position is available from March 1, 2026, in full-time or part-time employment and is limited until February 28, 2027. The salary is based on the German public sector pay scale (TV-L); classification in pay grade E13 is possible if the personal requirements are met.

Our research group Artificial Intelligence in Hematology (www.ai-in-cancer.org) is seeking a Research Associate. We are an interdisciplinary team of physicians, biologists, and computer scientists dedicated to improving cancer care through data science and artificial intelligence.
Your Responsibilities – Where Your Expertise Matters:

Development of computer-vision pipelines for the diagnosis of blood cancers using microscopic images, detection of digital biomarkers, prognostic modeling, and therapy selection

Optimization of existing pipelines for training and deploying classification, object detection, and segmentation models
-
Improving model robustness to varying imaging conditions (different microscopes/slide scanners, staining variations, illumination differences)

Monitoring state-of-the-art developments and applying them to improve existing projects as well as conceptualizing new ones

Implementation of data-centered design principles to optimize data processing and analysis

Maintenance of repository systems for code, data, and artifact management
Your Profile – What Makes You a Great Fit:
-
University degree and demonstrated expertise in areas such as computer science, computer vision, machine learning, mathematical image processing, bioinformatics, or similar
-
Strong understanding of software development in the context of machine learning and computer vision (MLOps)

Practical skills in object-oriented programming with Python and in the AI software development lifecycle (DevOps, MLOps, GitOps, testing), including containerization (Docker), version control (Git), and high-performance computing (HPC)

Experience with agile software development methods

Enjoy working in a team and able to coordinate and implement tasks independently and in a goal-oriented manner

Strong programming skills in modern deep-learning frameworks (PyTorch preferred, TensorFlow) and common scientific computing libraries (e.g. NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, OpenCV)

Our lab operates in English (fluency required); German skills are not mandatory, but beneficial
- Desirable: PhD/Postdoc experience; academic background with publications in peer-reviewed journals/conferences (machine learning, image processing, medical image processing, medical informatics); experience in writing grant applications and in project management (scheduling, resource planning)
