Research Engineer (f/m/d) for AI-Software in Surgical Navigation Systems
Research Engineer (f/m/d)
in the field of Translational Surgical Oncology
The position is available from November 1st, 2026, on a full-time or part-time basis, and is initially limited to 24 months. Remuneration will be based on the applicable provisions of the institution’s collective bargaining agreement and, subject to the candidate’s personal qualifications, may be assigned to salary grade U13.
The institute for Translational Surgical Oncology (TSO) at the NCT Dresden conducts research in the area of computer- and robot-assisted surgery.
Our focus lies on surgical navigation, robotics, simulation and training. Our group develops AI systems that fuse live endoscopic video streams with preoperative 3D CT or MRI data and display the results in an augmented-reality fashion to the surgeons. The AI methods perform tasks such as segmentation, depth-estimation, feature tracking and registration in real-time. To control these systems, we are building semi-automatic methods with intuitive user-interfaces that are ready to be operated inside the OR.
In this context, the current role would aid with the translation of AI-systems into the operating room. This requires active research topics such as endoscopic video processing, camera calibration, real-time computing and phantom validation in our experimental operating room. The candidate would help in the translation of current research topics into clean, high-quality medical applications, which includes the documentation according to requirements by regulatory authorities (no prior knowledge required) and they would help PhD students integrate new AI solutions into the pipeline. Depending on the candidate’s preferences, further topics can include rendering, augmented reality and registration, as well as student supervision.
